Info request on Apple //e munmeric keypad

I have recently purchased an Apple //e Numeric Keypad that I am trying to
get connected to my //e.  The 15-pin D shaped connector does not exactly
fit any of the openings on the back of the computer.  Am I possibly missing
some special adapter that came with it?  I have the cable and the adapter
plate that goes around it, but it just doesn't fit properly.
