If your machine will do it, the diagnostic test idea may get you
on the right track.
In case you have not already, you might try disconnecting any
joysticks, sketch pads, etc. -- you could have a shorted button-- and
diddling your KB keys to free up any which may have become stuck.
Lots of times, symptoms such as those you describe can be traced
to an IC or two which have become loose. Other IC's may seem firmly set
but have pins which have lost contact with socket points.
With power OFF, try scootching up and re-socketing each socketed
IC as well as any internal cables plugged into the motherboard.
