Imagewriter II help
I picked up a decent Apple IIe system the other day at the local thrift
store for $35. It included an Imagewriter II(w/color ribbon) as part of
the deal. Seems the printer was exposed to some water for a brief
time. Not submerged, but maybe about an inch or so judging by the marks
inside the case. Seemed to power up ok, but the carriage refused to
move. Further disassembly showed some water in the stepper motor for
the carriage. Cleaned everything up, put it back together and now the
carriage moves from wherever it is to the far left position, then cycles
through the four colors on the ribbon. According to the Apple Tech
Notes, it's supposed to move left and then rapidly to the center of the
platen before doing the color cycle. It doesn't want to print, either.
Typing PR#1 from the keyboard makes the platen jump a line like I would
expect. But listing anything to the printer doesn't do anything.
Eventually the red light blinks on the front panel and the IIe locks up.
I suspect the previous owner may have powered it up(after exposure to
the water) too many times and damaged some of the stepper controller.
Sams wants $24.95 for a Photofact. I thought I'd try here first and see
if anyone has some in depth info on servicing this guy. The lab is
fully equipped with test equipment, but with no servicing info, it makes
repair just that much tougher. Thanks for any help.
