Your SSC settings are just the speed between the computer and the
modem, what the peecee people like to call the "DCE rate". The
modem's data rate on the phone line can be different. In the peecee
case, the DCE rate is usually much higher than the modem speed. In
the case of Apple ]['s, the DCE rate is likely to be nearly the same
or lower than the modem speed.
As for the modem itself, Nearly all of them are backward compatible
at least to some degree. That is to say, you can force them to
slower, older standards if you feed them the right "AT" commands.
One problem is that the current crop of modems is sadly lacking in
documentation, so you can't figure out what the right commands are.
My 2e still sports a Packard Bell 2400, so I can't give you any
experience-proven details on using the new high speed modems.
Maybe some of the other group regulars can fill in the gaps.
