Have to disagree.  SMT might not be putting their brand name on the
Dallas Semiconductors DS1215E, but they're still being made, and are
available from Jameco for about $20 and Alltech still has them.  There
are plenty of applications for the chipsocket including in pay phones.
Story is told that linemen carry a bag of them on their rounds.

Just recently Radio Shack phased out the Smartwatch cards for their
older machines, which contained the chipsocket.  Had I realized this a
month earlier, I could have scored one for $1.97, with 2-5 years left on
its battery as far as I can tell.  But no, the cards were thrown out.

As for the question of whether the battery can be replaced:  I will
investigate the matter one day.  Radio Shack can get ahold of a LOT of
odd cells (I can name some they can't though), and until my NSC poops
out I won't try to find out what the cell's brand/# data is [anyone who
has pulled their cell out, can you tell me?].  Mine should die soon...
