Did you try replacing the fuse?  I know, it sounds stupid...but fuses do
occasionally blow for no apparent reason...replace them end everything is
fine.  I had a piece of gear do that to me last week, in fact.

You say you don't want the standard GS power supply...but have you
considered (if you can't get the Vulcan fixed) using a different power
supply?  The drive inside my Vulcan was a standard IDE 3.5" drive, which
included a standard power connector.  You could contact Mr. Buggie and get
one of his power supplies and use it to separately power both the
motherboard and the drive.

When I upgraded my GS hard drive, I yanked the mechanism from the Vulcan
case and installed a 250Mb SCSI drive in the Vulcan case, then put the
Vulcan controller into my ][e.  In that machine, I took a power connector
and soldered it to the power supply connector points on the bottom of the
][e motherboard, then bolted the drive into place under the keyboard.
