It doesn't.  If the Zip has a slot set to "slow" mode, then accessing
the slot I/O locations or firmware causes the ZIP to stop accelerating
the machine for the next 50 milliseconds.  This is intended to allow for
devices which have firmware or support software which is relying on the
processor speed for timing.

If the slot is set to "fast" then there is no slow down, except for the
actual cycles in which memory are accessed, which are at 1 MHz or 2.8
MHz as appropriate.
