Re: Sound in Ultima V

Booting the patch disk and installing the MockingBoard patch for
Ultima V on GS works okay. However, it is something of a bother, since
the Control Panel setting for the MockingBoard's Slot has to be "Your
Card" for playing Ultima and, most likely, something else for normal
system use.

     Another problem on some versions of Ultima V is that you cannot play
the game at "Normal" speed. Setting Control Panel "Speed" to "Normal"
does not work because a game routine re-sets the Speed register to
"Fast".

     Since it is possible to produce an 'open' copy of Ultima V's boot
disk (named "Disk One: Program"), it seemed like a good idea to fix the
above problems on the copy. The result is an Ultima V boot disk tailored
for running the game with MockingBoard sound on a MockingBoard-equipped
GS. It also allows setting speed to "Normal". These options are built in;
so, there is no longer any need for a separate patch disk and no need to
mess with Control Panel settings.

     The Deprotect-Copy program and Patcher program along with a 'Readme
file are in a file named U5MBONGS.SHK. It has been uploaded to Ground's
AOL Games Adventure Role-Play folder.
