UGH! That would really suck, Frankly I can hardly stand to look
a hardware based "text screen" on any computer after using text
editors and the like windowed on a graphics screen. A text screen
is so limited and confining. If a terminal is windowed on a graphics
screen it can be any size or shape, with any font or color.
As for speed, my old Mac Centris 650 (25Mhz 68040) slings text
around in a window a lot faster than my 7Mhz zipped IIgs does in
text mode.
The problem with including a character generator is that lazy
programmers will use it, making programs that might otherwise
be attractive practically unusable.
