For clarification: mIRC and Pirch are IRC clients used by lamers in the
wintel community to access IRC (Internet Relay Chat) from a ppp
connection to their provider.
The GS "EASILY" will operate on IRC for your by using Proterm or
ANSITerm or Spectrum.
However, the key thing you need is to make sure that your ISP (Internet
Service Provider) has full 'shell' capability for your and that they
include internet clients like: ircII and "screen" (which allows you to
effectively multitask from your GS on your ISP's machine).
So.. once you have established that your provider has a unix type shell
for you, you simply use your terminal program to call the ISP and at the
unix prompt, you type: irc
simple as that... then, ircII (the unix irc client) will start up.
HOWEVER!!! I STRONGLY suggest that you enhance your ircII experience by
downloading a copy of Zscript (the FINEST ircII script known to man or
beast ..even tho Zelix is kinda lame! :))
Zscript is a neat script written by Zelix (who also has the wellknown
Apple2 site on his HP).
This script shortens all the keystroke commands and adds some very
powerful capability to 'ops' functions. You can download Zscript from
Zelix's HP or if you find me on irc (I live there), I will be glad to
'dcc' it to you.
I have been ircing with my GS for a couple years now. BTW, if and when
you get to IRC, don't bother going to a channel called #appleiigs. This
channel is dominated by a group who mostly no longer have anything to do
with the gs and are about the rudest bunch of people I have met
anywhere.. on internet or in person. (excepting Nathan.. he's kinda
kewl! :))
Look for me on irc EFnet in #germany or #genealogy or on #Zscript with
