Take a look at the docs for the drive and see if there's a way to disable synchronous negotiation and/or disconnect. These are newer notions that may be giving the Ramfast some issues.

I would expect the RF to recognize _something_ on that id even if it couldn't mount it as a volume.

The drive in question is a Quantum Fireball 1080S, so there are no settings like you suggest. It is pretty much like its smaller brothers, except for having ParK and Termination Enable jumpers on the board.

I even tried some even larger drives (Nine gig partitioned into 4 gig HFS partitions, but the RamFast/GS gagged on these drives - purple screen when that drive was polled on boot-up.

I guess I could mount the drive on the Macintosh and Appletalk over to it... but that's pretty slow (not that slow is a problem... I'm just doing this all as a way to play with my IIGS and its programs).

For now, I'll just continue to use my 270 meg Tsunami drives (one boot drive with 8 Prodos partitions, and two with HFS partitions). I was kind of looking forward to having one Prodos drive and one large HFS drive.

Just for academic research, however, if anybody knows of a RamFast size limitation, or has suggestions on how to research it, I'd find it interesting to play around with it.
