Apple //c+ w/Apple HD20 hard drive

Someone once suggested that the Apple //c or //c+ could be used with the Apple 
HD20 (not the scsi based HD20SC) by plugging it into the floppy drive port.  
Could anyone provide details, please. When I try it, I get an error message 
saying that the "disk" is write protected.
