You guys will appreciate this...
...even if no one I work with does...
I have two computers sitting on my desk. One is a 40MHz 80486 machine
running Windoze '95 (very slowly. Windoze because that's what I tend to
do while I wait for the damn thing). On it, I have Telnet, FTP, Netscape
3.01, and a really cute roller coaster screen saver.
The other computer is a ROM 01 Apple IIgs. It's got 1.25Mb of memory, a
20Mb Focus, and it runs AppleWorks, Teach, GraphicWriter III...heck, if
the thing had more memory, I'd be running HyperCard. I'm hooked up via
AppleTalk to a Macintosh IIcx at the other end of the office and an HP
DeskJet 1600C (Postscript! AppleTalk!). I mostly have the Mac hooked up
because I can do it, and because it gives me an easy way to get files from
the PC to the GS.
Anyway, I handle all the "traditional" media for a mid-size University.
The IIgs keeps track of the equipment inventory, and prints up any forms I
need. Eventually, I'll also use it for tracking maintenance and equipment
circulation. Meanwhile, the Wintel box plays Netscape. Why? Because the
GS is a lousy Web browser, and I have yet to see a decent database on the
PC that did what I need it to do the way I need to do it. And for
designing forms and such, GraphicWriter is a lot simpler (not to mention
cheaper) than PageMaker.
In my book, this is called "appropriate application of computer technology."
