Apple didn't supply any Deskwriter drivers (typically the only other
Appletalk printer a IIGS user is likely to use) at all with GS/OS. Neither
Harmonie from Vitesse nor Seven Hill's Independence DeskJet/Deskwriter
drivers will work over AppleTalk.
Theoretically, you could hack the Imagewriter driver to get it to work
with a DeskWriter. (Among the steps to take is changing the word
Imagewriter to Deskwriter with a block editor in the NetPrinter CDev).
This is because the DeskWriter DOES have some built-in fonts (at least
some models do...the DW500C and the DW310 for sure) despite HP's
documentation that says they do not. However, this would only give you
text printing, so you wouldn't want to try printing from GraphicWriter III
with lots of graphics and boxes, etc.
However, the fellow on Genie who was testing this out never finished as
far as I know. I did try it myself, but didn't catch all the instances of
Imagewriter in the CDev (not much for block editors anyway).
So is it impossible? NO. Is it easy? NO. Will Seven Hills ever incorporate
AppleTalk printing into Independence? Unlikely, but possible. Will
Vitesse? I strongly doubt it (I don't think they are doing any Apple II
development anymore, only PC).
