Dear Peter,
Bernie does not "security erase" a volume. when initializing a disk in the gs
Finder, I guess it only writes the disk structure and there you go. All
remaining blocks contain just garbage. ("Initializing" actually does not
include erasing all blocks - that's one by formatting a disk.)
You can, of course, erase the whole disk which will result in much better
comrpession ratios when stuffing them.
