Update: Status of WordPerfect for the Apple II and IIGS
To recap, after Corel decided to release both the 8-bit Apple II
version of WordPerfect and the powerful 16-bit Apple IIGS version
as freeware, they discovered that the rights to the program had
been sold to a company called Quality Software. This lead to
a search for the mysterious company. After trying to contact
the California number provided by owners of QS software and books
(818-709-1721), it turns out that they're no longer at the
address. Further investigation led to a company in MA.
In summarize, if all works out, they will release the software
as shareware. Here is an outline of the shareware terms.
-WordPerfect for the IIGS and WordPerfect IIe/IIc will be
released as shareware. They may be distributed freely, but
may not be sold alone or packaged with other software.
The user may evaluate the software for 14 days for free,
after which a fee of $10 is to be sent to them or the
user must stop using the software.
-Quality Software will not provide technical support for the
product.
-They no longer have the hardware to make the disks, so the
user must find a copy of the software themselves.
-Shareware fees are to be sent to:
Quality Software

When things get finalized, I will send the letter to Charles
Turley, since he has the other verifications and started
this project and he has a scanner (it may take me a couple
of days to find the time to drop by the post, so please be
patient).
As to where to get a copy of the program, it looks like
someone jumped the gun and uploaded WPGS during the Corel
part of the puzzle. I found a copy in the incoming folder
of the ftp.apple.asimov.net FTP site, along with a copy of
my review of the program. Note: I *did not* upload the
program, but the review was posted to comp.sys.apple2 by
me and someone uploaded it to the site. Asimov is free
to use the review, but I do not take responsibility for the
program being there.
(I don't know what version of WPGS is on that site, but
ideally the final distribution version should be v2.1e from
1993, the latest and greatest.)
