gs modem port problem

I have been unable to use the apple//gs modem port on my computer.  I can 
configure the printer port and use it to access my modem.   I found a similar 
problem with several of the gs's at the school where I work.  If this is a 
common problem, others must have encountered it.  Could it be a setting on my 
computer or possibly the modem cable (which I made up).  This cable works fine 
when I go through the modem port.  Your help is appreciated.
