There's also an OS (from a little known company) called Windows NT. 
It's
not terribly expensive (about $150 for the academic edition), and it
was designed with top-notched memory protection in mind.  Unfortunately 
NT 4.0's hardware requirements is pretty steep.  You'll pretty much
have to get a Pentium 166 with 32 MB of RAM (all plans for use of NT 4.0
with a PowerPC/Mac has been dropped).

For our computer science classes, we pretty much do all our coding in
the
lab or by telneting to my university's unix servers.  Hence an Apple ][+ 
with a 80-column card would have been enough.
