Monica,

This is caused by the small battery inside your computer being dead.  The
small battery will work for up to about 5 years some a little longer some a
little less. This battery is what keeps track of the time and other
settings when your computer is turned off or unplugged.  You should be able
to get a replacement battery at any Macintosh computer store for around
($5-8 US dollars).
