I have also had this problem, but it was due to a defect with the original
keyboards which were sold with GSes; because of an improper design, the
solder connections have unwanted stress applied to them, which can cause
them to break. The solution to this proble mis simply to re-solder the
connector.
When this happens, it can cause random garbage characters to appear on your
screen, (which sometimes do not go away after you unplug the keyboard) and
also trouble with the mouse.
