Apple IIc File Transfer

I've got an Apple IIc with rom version 3, and I'm trying to get some
Appleworks stuff (5 1/4") on to my PC.  I thought that I could make a
cable, start a comm program on my PC, and then print from Appleworks. But
NOOOOO.  I got a SmartCable (brandname) RS-232 breakout box and was unable
to get the two to talk.  I seem to remember that when I got this IIc that
they said the printer(?) port didn't work.  I tried both serial ports and
it exhibits the same behavior.  When it tries to print it changes the
status of DTR and DCS but nothing transfers.  Of course the comm
parameters are the same (9600, N, 8, 1).  Tried 300 baud but to no avail.
Does anybody know how to troubleshoot Apple IIc UARTs?
Does anybody have a 3.5" disk that I can hook to my IIc and so that I can
save my files to that, and have it readable by my MAC?
I have ProDos Ver 8 1.5 and AppleWorks 2.1
