If they are text files (or AppleWorks), the simplest thing is to transfer 
them to ProDOS 3.5" disks.  They can be read directly in the Mac drive by 
many modern Mac programs (ie - ClarisWorks).  He needs to find someone with 
an Apple II with both size drives.  I do -- and will transfer for a fee, but 
there should be someone around who will have the necessary equipment who 
will let you borrow it for a few hours.
