Did you try to use Express while switching programs?  Some programs
don't start up the print manager and won't print through Express while
they are open.

Also, for some reason, when AppleWorks GS prints to Express, Express
refuses to start the printer until I quit to the Finder.

Try quitting to the Finder after printing to Express and see if it
will start the printer.
