This sounds like a common dirty drive head problem.  

I found that when reading old moldy 15 year old 
disks, all of the shit that collected on 
the disks over the years ended up on the drive 
heads and I had to clean the drive about every 
30-40 disk swaps.  Pick yourself up a drive head 
cleaning disk at Radio Shack and put a drop of 
rubbing alcohol on the surface - You'll find this 
works wonders...

FYI - This seems to happen more frequently on disks 
kept in a humid environment - such as a basement.
