I wrote a two-part series in II ALIVE magazine on "HACKING THE HACKABLE
DISK II." Will send reprints if requested. The article describes two
custom modifications that improve the drive's performance: (1) three-way
front panel write-protect switch ---- normal/ always protect/ always
enable, and (2) front-panel speed knob.
The write-protect switch gives full control over writing; you do not have
to "notch" the disks to write on the back side of disks.
Now, thanks to advice by Steve Townsend, I have successfully added a
subminiature three-position toggle switch to the front panel of the
platinum grey APPLE 5.25 DRIVE, which works just like the Disk II version.
Have NOT yet figured out where to connect the front-panel speed knob for
the platinum 5.25 drive.
BUT, if you want the front panel write-protect switch added to your
platinum 5.25 drive, I will do it for $5 per drive, plus return shipping.
Return shipping (within lower 48 states) would be $5. UPS for one drive,
or $9 total for two drives shipped together. Allow 2 weeks turnaround time.
