As you mention colour, I assume you mean an ImageWriter II, not an
original ImageWriter.

Which version of AppleWorks are you using, and are you mainly interested
in the Word Processor, or do you also want colour database and
spreadsheet output?

With AppleWorks 2.1 or earlier, it is rather difficult to add colour,
without sacrificing some other feature of the printer, and you need to
enter a custom printer definition.

In AppleWorks 3.0, they added a feature called "Special Codes".  This
lets you enter six arbitrary commands for a printer.  It is possible to
set these up to send commands to the printer to select the colour.
There are seven colours available (including black), so you have to pick
at least one that you don't want to generate (I suggest yellow, as it is
practically invisible).

To set up the special codes, go to "Other activities", "Specify
information about your printers", then edit the entry for the
ImageWriter II.  There should be an entry under "Printer Codes" called
"Special Codes".

You need to enter a name for each code, along with the exact sequence of
characters it will generate.  The commands for the colours are listed on
the quick reference card in the ImageWriter II Owner's Manual.

To enter the special codes into the document, use Apple-O, type "SC",
then enter the number of the special code.


For the database, there is no facility for entering special codes at
arbitrary points, but you can print an entire report in colour by
entering special printer commands on the option screen.  I've rarely
printed anything in the spreadsheet, and I don't recall if it supports
this as well.
