     Disk ][ drives have been known to 'blow up' just in the course of
normal service. If you plugged in the drive correctly, then, the most
likely source of the noise, etc. is a blown capacitor. (Sometimes, there
is a loud bang; sometimes, a pop and squeal, ...-- it's kind of like
over-heating a small sealed can of soup.)

    Remove the drive cover and check for a messed up capacitor or one with
some nearby goo. If you find one, replace it and try out your drive again.
