    I can attest to that. I recently tried a USRobotics Sportster 33.6K
modem with my Apple IIgs (connecting to a local ISP with a decent pool
of modems and lines) and it worked flawlessly. It connected at the same
speeds as my brother's PC, the machine it's regularly used with, often 
at 31.2K or higher. CPS with downloads was quite impressive as well, at 
least when using ProTERM 3.1 (my memory is a little fuzzy, but I think 
it was something like 3500 CPS on average?)

    A stock (unaccelerated) Apple IIgs should handle up to 14.4K just
fine, although you would probably need a ZipGS or TWGS accelerator to 
go much beyond that reliably. The most important thing, with any high
speed modem, is that you have a hardware handshaking cable.
