If something is copyrighted and says quite plainly, no re-distribution
then it means there are legal ramifications if you decide not to
follow that copyright.
As for the free-ware / shareware bit, there are a lot of people who
have done a lot to contribute things to community projects such as the
Beagle and AE projects. Many of the documents that our buddy KENB has
put on it site were created specifically for the AE project and did
not exist until Brian created them. I dont particularly care about
the inclusion of those on other sites, but it does piss me off quite
royally when someone like KENB comes along, sucks down all my sites
that I have spent 10 years plus putting together and puts it up as his
collection without credit. He even went so far as to put stuff up
that was only available to our members.
I have to say he did comply with the takedown notices to a good
extent, however, he still has not credited Brian or AE for the
documents he has on his site which clearly have Brian's tag lines in
the documents.
Sean, I know you feel it should be out there if it is out there,
however there are still a lot of things that are copyrighted and sold
(by ourselves and sheppy and a few other programmers) and we should
respect that. We have attempted to make as many things free as we can
in the past few years, however, that is not always possible. As for
me, I will keep making the sites and making the things free when
possible but this crap of someone completely stealing the work after
it is completed is complete idiocy.
JMHO on the subject.
