If you are talking about any Apple II before the Apple IIgs or IIc, you can 
use most dot matrix printers, using a parallel card or serial card, for the 
appropriate printer.  Most common was the ImageWriter series with serial 
card, and any Epson compatible parallel printer with parallel card.
 
There were many other possibilities, but those were the most common.
 
Only a few inkjets will work with the IIs.
 
All of these will work with the IIgs, but you have the additional capability 
of using the serial port for some printers (such as ImageWriter series) and 
even AppleTalk laser printers.  The IIc is somewhat more restricted.
