Re: Wanted:II GS software and more..
The IIGS System Software (presently at 6.0.1) is made up of 6 disks. To
use this you really need to have a hard drive on the system (the IIGS can
use SCSI drives with the addition of a SCSI card or IDE drives, some of
which use a separate card, others of which are mounted on a card). You
_could_ get by with 2 3.5" drives, but you'd still have some disk
swapping.
Claris sold two "versions" of AppleWorks...AppleWorks (classic) which is a
8-bit program (runs on IIe, IIc as well as IIGS) and AppleWorks GS (this
is the GUI works program). It came on four (?) disks with System 5.0.2. If
the system is complaining that it cannot read the disk, it could be that
one is bad.
Both AppleWorks and AppleWorks GS are now sold and supported by Scantron
Quality Computers (AppleWorks GS is at version 1.1 and AppleWorks is at
version 5.1). The GS version would be the GUI wordprocessor that you want
for your mother, although there are several NDA (new desk accessory--ie,
they show up in the Apple menu in Finder, etc.) text editors such as
ShadowWrite/Hermes (freeware) or EGOed (commercial) which might fit the
bill. There is also Rolf Braun's CoolWriter 3.0 which has some neat
features, including mail merge (this is a standalone text editor).
If you can let me know the set up of your system in more detail we might
be able to get you going a little more easily. What RAM do you have, any
hard drives, etc.
You can take a look at my web site for an article on upgrading IIGS

for the FAQ files on the Apple II and other FAQ's related to our computer.
