Fixing? I've never had any trouble with them. Just be sure that you do
BINARY transfers, so that the ^M's don't turn into ^J's or ^M^J's. The
files on Caltech are mostly Shrinkit archives, but they do not have the
BINSCII armor that makes them impervious to corruption by
too-smart-for-their-own-good transfer protocols. Be sure to use binary
transfers at every step of the transfer process, and you should have no
problems.
If you are working from an FTP shell prompt ("ftp>" or something like
that), be sure to issue a "binary" command as follows:
ftp>binary
Type set to l
ftp>
before you GET the files.
