You don't need to change the VGC to get a ROM 01, I know lots of people who
only opted for the ROM swap. I only got the ROM myself at first, then decided
to get the VGC too. Why not, it was free.

ROM 01 and the -C VGC became available to existing owners in Oct '87. So boxes
from probably Aug '87 on had the new chips. The part numbers on the board are
the best way to tell since assuming every box still has its original board is
not so good an idea after this long.
