IIe socket shims

I pulled the RAM from my IIe so I could test some spare RAM. Under the
chips, plugged into the sockets were plastic shims. Other than raising
the chips higher in the socket and also making it harder to remove the
chips, what is the purpose of these shims? I've been dealing with
electronics for many years and this is the first time I have seen such
shims.
