Well, it helps when your ISP has digital modems (Ascend MAXs).

You'll also be interested in the diagnostics mode on the display that gives 
you more info about the quality of your connection.  Try ATS194=42

This only works on the 28.8 and up models.

Mine is currently flashing between:
V34 T28.8  R31.2
LAPM      V42bis
and
RXL:-24  EQM:33
SNR: 38  SR:3429

with occation retrain notices and who requested them (remote/local).

Yeah, the #LCD command is cute.
