SQC's latest "Nothing but Apples"
I thought this would be of interest, I just received the latest
edition of Scantron Quality Computer's "Nothing but Apples" catalog.
For those who don't recall, this booklet was created as a spin-off
from the company's main IBM/Mac catalog, thus removing all traces of
Apple II products. As the months passed, the booklet became smaller
and was printed on less expensive paper. And now...?
It is no longer a catalog, a booklet, nor is it even a phamplet!
"Nothing But Apples" is now a folded sheet of paper, on what feels
and looks like a piece of thin brown-paper bag. Gone are the glossy
color photographs and illustrations, gone are the nice fonts, headers
and detailed descriptions of each item. Instead it has been replaced
by plain brown print (on light brown paper) with the odd B&W image
here and there, but few really. At least it no longer has that look
of a child's coloring book, about the only positive thing -- or is it?
I fear this is meant to serve as a close-out/clearance list for
their Apple II stock. At the bottom of each page, they've written
and stated, "Quantities are Limited -- Order Today!". To me, this
implies when an item is out of stock, they will _not_ order any more.
Very little is here too, they no longer list any Sequential Systems
products (not even Second Sight or RamFAST) and some software prices
would indicate clear-out prices (e.g. Platinum Paint 2.0 for $19.95).
OTOH, they still see it fit to overcharge on hardware, such as a
refurbished 21 MB Floptical drive for US$400, 85 MB external SCSI
drive for US$330, IIgs 4 MB RAM boards for US$150, AppleColor RGB
for US$300 or an AE 2400 bps data/fax modem...US$300.
This is yet further proof of SQC's diminishing support, or quite
possibly, a sign it will soon be ending. Interestingly, the very same
month II-Alive is cease publishing, this close-out list appears. I still
recommend buying from SQC if they have a prodcut you wish to buy, but I
don't think I'm out of place making these observations (last time I was
flammed for doing so).
