apple II hangs at system monitor. please help

Hi everybody,

My friend has an Apple II. He can't get it out of system
monitor mode. Can anybody help me or at least point me
to some way of finding who can help?

Here's the facts:

It's an Apple II. Not a II+ or anything else like that. It does
not have auto-start ROM. It uses old monitor ROM.
The external drive was in slot #6. It's using a Disk II interface
card, and a Fourth Super Drive II. The Apple II has 48k of
memory.

When he turns on the computer, he gets a screenful of
garbage characters (which is normal for Apple II's without
autostart ROM). Then he gets the system monitor prompt,
an asterisk (*).

He types a control character, then 3D0G. (I'm sorry, but
I forget what control character it was. But he followed the
instructions in the back of the manual for Apple II's that
don't have auto-start ROM.) Then he presses
"return" and expects to get into integer basic.

But instead, it shows the contents of a few registers and
then stops.

We know that his control key is working because control-g
gives the bell tone.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

David

P.S. He's had this Apple II for a long time. He hasn't
used it for years and years, but it used to work.
Perhaps over the years he's forgotten a trick that's not
in the manual.
