Apple2e File Extensions

I use a Apple2e with a 20 meg. HD, 1Meg RamworksIII and Prosel 8 to 
access bulletin boards and the 'Net.  Occasionally without apparent 
reason, the system crashes in to the monitor. When looking at the file 
structure, some of the program extensions have changed to REL, ie.
PRODOS SYS TO PRODOS REL   APPLEWORKS SYS TO APPLEWORKS REL.  Replacing 
the affected programs clears everything up.  question: What does REL 
stand for??  BTW, I'm using PRODOS 2.0.3  Any help with this is greatly 
appreciated.  Thanks all, Hans
