Appleworks Version

Dear Matt,

Appleworks is one of the few 8 bit programs for the Apple II still
being sold commercially. The current version is AppleWorks 5.1,
available from Quality Computers 800/777-3642, or put out a notice on
comp.sys.apple2.marketplace. Version 4.3 is also out, but does not
have quite the stability that 5.1 does. The 5.1 version has a strong
macro language built in, plus many features that were previously
separate addons. For text based (as opposed to graphic based) work, it
is a pretty good suite, and the macro language makes it highly
adaptable, as strong in its own text-based way as even the most recent
mac/ibm apps. If you can find version 5.0 then the upgrade to 5.1 is
available free on Genie, or other places. Version 5 requires at least
256 K of memory and a 3.5 drive or Unidrive.

Owners of IIe's and IIc's with no extra memory and 5.25 drives only
should consider staying with version 3. Version 4.x will work after a
fashion but is pretty frustrating to use with 5.25 drives. If you have
extra memory--a meg would be best--then there are a couple of ways to
load either 4.3 or 5 into memory and work from there. ProSel 8 is the
best way to go to create the needed ram drive and autoloading. Hope
this helps.
