Yes, that is what you'll have to do on a ROM 01 GS. Since you have to
make slot 1 'Your card' anyhow to use Appletalk, you can put the SCSI
card there. From the control panel, you can then set your startup slot
to '1', not 'Scan' to keep it from checking the 5.25" and 3.5" drives
on bootup.
If you occasionally do want to boot off them, Eric Shepherd's
"Proboot" program (check various A2 ftp sites) lets you hold down open
apple at boot and stop booting off your HD and boot off any other disk
in the system. Apparently a real useful program.
