Faxination works better with _my_ modem (ZyXEL U-1496E).  From what I've
heard, PMPFax works better than Faxination with most modems.  I've found
that Faxination is generally faster than PMPFax, but has a lot less
features.  For example, its cover page is almost totally useless (and
very ugly), while PMPFax has a fully configurable cover page.

I expect that PMPFax will work fine with current (28k8) ZyXEL modems,
because they support Class 1 faxing without trying to tell the computer
that they don't.  A firmware upgrade to my modem would be sufficient to
get around this problem, but that isn't likely to happen.

Faxination was sold by Vitesse, and I expect it is still available.

By the way, the surname is "Empson".  I get rather touchy about being
confused with a printer brand.  :-)
