Don't forget that Apple's production machines in 1981 also had socketed
chips.

Yes, a real //e's AUX slot has 60 contacts.

Probably for a video modulator and/or PAL/SECAM adapters, as in the
II+.

Do these look like they're more closely connected to the clock logic
or the RAM decode logic? I'm just extrapolating from my knowledge
of the II+ here: As there are only 8 RAM sockets on the motherboard
and 256kbit DRAM wasn't even being sampled in '81, I doubt this is
for anything as fancy as allowing 256kbit memory. It's probably
related to changing the video rates for PAL/SECAM.
