Can you successfully type back & forth with regular terminal programs?
(If you don't have a term program for your Apple //, just type the
following (assuming your SSC is in slot 2):
IN#2
PR#2
Ctrl-A T

Try using/not using a null-modem adapter.  You can get similar effects
by trying the jumper with the triangle on it on your SSC in both the
Terminal and Modem positions.  (I THINK those are the names of the
positions, anyway...)
