ZipGS 15/64 problem was heat related!
I finally discovered the apparent source of my 15 MHz/64K cache
ZipGS lockups -- HEAT! I've tried slower oscillators, swapping SRAMs
around, removing cards, a 150W PC powersupply, etc. The one thing I
didn't try: point a running fan at my card! :-)
By removing the lid and running a fan over my cards, everything
runs 100% stable and oddities disappear. The fan definitely helps,
moments after I shut it down, the lock-ups reoccur. Although I'm
using a Kensington System Saver IIgs and the inwards of my GS (and
ZipGS itself) remain cool to the touch, apparently it's not enough.
Without using a desk fan, I cannot run more than a few minutes
before the 15/64 locks up (it is somewhat stable as a 15/32, but
I still experience freezes and crashes from time to time).
I need a solution. Should I try a heat-sink or thermal paste?
What about a PC ultra-mini CPU fan? I would guess a mini-fan would
be enough, but how would I mount and power it? Could I use the
motherboard connector (two pins) Apple intended for use with their
internal fan, or would that overload my powersupply? I'm also not
sure what part of my ZipGS board is overheating (ASIC, PLCC 65C816,
SRAMs, 74xxx), anyone care to take a guess? :)
