Drop by news.admin.net-abuse.misc and read up on it. Basically,
something went ballistic and cancelled >27,000 articles all over
the net. Some competent admins had the ability to restore most to
all of those messages.

It also appears that whomever did the hit job was trying to make
anything that issues cancels for posts look bad. [Stuff like the bots
that kill off large binary postings to non-binary newsgroups, etc.]
However, this case demonstrated that rogue cancellings can be cleaned
up after, to a degree. However, usenet and most of the rest of the
internet seems to be moving off the honor system of certain known
loopholes not being exploited for malicious purposes.

Nah, the consensus on n.a.na.m is that it came from a tiny ISP.
Also, 4 years ago, you could tell when the university kids came back
from summer break by the increase in traffic. Now, with everyone and
their pet goldfish getting on the internet, the summer dip's a lot
lower.
