If you want the memory to aappear as a RAMdisk, then yes, it's
necesary (With some programs, you also have to rename it /RAM7 or
something).  However, several programs (AppleWorks version 3 and up,
PublishIt!, and maybe Locksmith) can use this memory with no help.
(older versions of AppleWorks need to have a patch installed on 'em,
which should've come with your card.  If not, I can email it to ya.)

You can use a program that comes with AppleWorks version 4 and up
(MEM.SYSTEM?) with AW versions 3 and up that allows you to use part of
your RAM as RAMdisk, and part for AW.
