The comp.sys.apple2 FAQ answers most of these questions, including
the ones asked in your followup on getting the system software. Please
take a look at http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html
Plenty of modems and printers work with the Apple II; no publically
available ethernet cards.

For a basic IIGS, maybe $200. You can get tons of hardware and
software; with stuff like printers and modems, it doesn't have to say
"IIGS compatible" on the box, but many items can still be used. See
