Assignment of Font Family IDs?

I've created a new font to use with an application.  What exactly is the
procedure for assigning a Family ID, etc for this new font so it doesn't
conflict with any existing fonts?  Is there someone I need to contact, or
am I pretty much on my own as to whether or not I run into a conflict with
something that is already lying around on someone's hard drive...
