What a shame that theres always those few people who are so retentive about
things like this (like Nathan). I make games for a living too, and I can
tell you that games written 10 years ago, for computers that aren't made
anymore, published by companies that don't exist anymore, does not hurt
anybody by being copied and enjoyed by people today.
Do you mean to tell me that you think that by me having a copy of Wizardry
in all its original glory (that is, mostly text, no animation, 6 color
graphics, no sound, etc) is going to PREVENT me from buying a version
written 10 years later for my PC? Do you honestly believe that? If the old
apple version compares at all to whats available now, well, theres a big
problem with the software now, and it wouldn't sell anyways. Its erroneous
to consider 10+ year old apple software a threat to current software. It
doesn't take revenues away from anybody. (No, that doesn't make it legal or
moral, I'm just responding to the idiotic arguement).
Without any money being involved, WHO CARES? Besides the few here who have
brought it upon themselves even though it doesn't affect them? Do you think
Origin cares that Wizardry is out there? Even if they did, and wanted to do
something about it, what would they gain? Nothing. They haven't lost
anything- there hasn't been any damages. Why would the SPA care about
something like this? They are more concerned with people pirating Novell
Networks and Quake. Why? Because those are worth something; Because they
have monetary value for somebody. Sabotage and Raster Blaster do not.
And for the ranting and raving about trying to shut down Asimov, well, at
least you have the courtesy to rant and rave publicly. Even though nothing
will probably ever come from it, every person who reads this and thinks
there may be a possibility of losing all these great treasures from the
past, is sure to download everything that exists there. Theres only a few
hundred megs... It can be done easily over a few nights. Telling people how
this is all going to be taken away only causes people to panic and get it
all now- kind of having the opposite effect that you would want? Unless, of
course, you want everybody to have a personal archive of Asimov...
You have to remember the group you are posting to. This is for Apple
emulators- for people who used to love the apple, or people who are just
discovering it. Whether with a real Apple or an emulator- you need
software. And when 99% of the software isn't made or available anymore,
what do you expect?
