   In short: yes, the superdrive controller card is needed to
interface an Apple II with slots to a superdrive and use all its
functionality. The GS and others with a 3.5" port built in to theim
can use superdrives, but only at 800K. Unfortunately, superdrives are
plentiful as mac users discard them, but the controller cards are in
short supply, so the going price is more than expected.
